reboot!

After a plugin upgrade completely hosed this thing, I'm working on getting it going again.  This will eventually lead to a complete move from the static portfolio site to an entirely WordPress-driven blog/portfolio site, which explains why some of the (backdated) things showing up here are also on my main site.

"Please bear with us during this transition period" and all that...

NCSU College of Textiles 2003 Bookmark

Every year, the NCSU College of Textiles produces a series of woven fabric bookmarks that they hand out to faculty, staff, and friends of the College. The bookmarks are normally designed by one of a handful of faculty members, but in 2003 a competition was created to design that year's bookmark. This design was ultimately chosen as the winner from approximately 30-40 entries.

The requirements of the project were that it must be 2 inches wide by 6.75 inches tall, and it must include "College of Textiles" and the current year somewhere in the design. I decided to go with a window design to frame each piece of the text. The school mascot wolf was added at the bottom left to balance the design. I chose red, black and white for the main color scheme since those are the University's colors, and later added the gold borders to add more variety to the design.

Double Fan Knit Fabric, Take Two

After making the smaller version of this fabric design, I tried enlarging the motif to see if it preserved any more of the detail inherent to the original artwork. It seems to have worked pretty well, although the motif looks a little too large in person to be used as anything more than, say, a small trim piece on a solid garment.

Double Fan Knit Fabric

I whipped this up in Knit Textile Design class as an undergraduate, for a project involving the jacquard knitting machines. The design is based off a Japanese motif. I wanted it to be in three colors, so I used two colors for the fans with a third for the background. This design was also knit with a black background (blue and tan fans) and a tan background (blue and black fans). The version pictured here looked the best to me.

Entwining Twill Knit Fabric

The design of this fabric was based off a design for a woven entwining twill, and was produced for a student project in a knit fabric design course.

The fabric was first knit in white and black; once we had examined it, we decided to go back and weave additional yardage in other colorways: first the red and black metallic, then the purple and black metallic, and finally a white and black with different, glossier yarns.
